Re: Computer Advice
Buy a clean PC and download Ubuntu and use it to replace the Windows (or other) OS that was pre-installed.

If Zambo needs MS support why do you think Ubuntu would be a good choice for him?

He is buying a new PC so the opportunity is there to start fresh and make a break from MS windows if he likes.

Re: Computer Advice
Old machines usually get a new lease of life with Linux and run much faster but I'd be reluctant to put it on a brand new machine for no other reason than it would seem like a waste (to me).
I'd put the Linux on the old machine and see if you like it and it runs all the stuff you need.
Alternatively, if you get your new machine from a non high street supplier you'll get just as good a machine as you would from PC world (or better) and they would easily put a dual boot system on it so you get the best of both worlds.

Yeah got that Mark but you're a high end user as are it seems most of the contributors to this type of thread and therefore more than happy to sort out drivers for your periherals if they don't plug and play. Zam I suspect will not want anything to do with that, he'll just want stuff to work straight out the box and not care how or who (respectfully).mark wrote:antdad wrote:mark wrote:Buy a clean PC and download Ubuntu and use it to replace the Windows (or other) OS that was pre-installed.

Re: Computer Advice
I paid around £450 each for for two pcs nearly 5 years ago and they were quad core with 4gb ram and 1tb hard drives with much the same other spec so think you could get a better deal than that to be honest.
Not from a high street name though but a very good and professional smaller outfit that I always use.
I'd suggest a few quotes from similar outfits as they have to go the extra mile to satisfy their customers and generally do.

It really depends what you plan to do when using it.
With things like pentium processors and Socket 1151 Motherboards they are components that have been around for years. So you need to know what versions of them are included, current more powerful versions or older more basic versions.
Quick look at these sites will give you an idea - https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... ntium.html and https://www.gigabyte.com/uk/Motherboard ... ocket-1151

Re: Computer Advice
All set up, but just noticed this. Anyone know what's occurring? Should I be concerned etc. wtf is a gaming controller and why am I connected to the internet by it?
As far as I know I am connected by some blue wire to my isp's hub. I think it's called ethernet or sommat
It then gives an ip address which is a dodgy proxy as well.
You are connected to the internet
Connected through Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller
ps excuse the usual ignorance.

Re: Computer Advice
Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller is the name of your router.
The "dodgy proxy" is an internal ip. That's normal, they all work like that.
