substantial saving going variable compared to fixed
stating the obvious award
with fixed, you know the score
but on bigger loans, that difference can be sizeable
with what is coming (or not, tin foil oil and all that pish)
for a big mortgage, right now, would you go fixed or variable?

Variable/trackers always look tempting, but given that it's your house that's potentially at stake, I normally go fixed unless it's an exceptional deal.
What I do find staggering is the proportion of people who don't sort out a new deal after the old one expires, so they go back on the high rate and pay way over the odds.

I’m on 5 year fixed at 2.7% switching to variable after 60 months.
At which point I’ll be onto my financial advisor to get me the best rate available.

Re: Mortgages at this time
5yr/10yr fixed rates are currently far more competitive than most variable/tracker rates.
Contrary to subsub, I let my main mortgage tracker deal run out and have been on a “standard” Nationwide rate of 2.1% for the past 5 years. I could do better, but I can pay as much capital off as I like when I like without any penalty - which suits my purpose at the moment.
I’ve also got an old filthy capitalist pig BTL mortgage at a stupendously daft rate of Base+0.89%. It ends shortly, but the provider has just agreed to extend it by 10 years on the same terms….which suggests that mortgage providers are short of customers at the moment.
