tbf it's both. The technique of most of the batsmen is unbelievably bad, and most of the shots they get out to demonstrates their lack of both mental and physical application. Wood will come in and just try and bowl as fast as he can and hit the deck as hard as he can. I saw one stat during the last test which said 93% of the balls bowled by English bowlers were wide of the wickets. If you want to get a team out, particularly the lower order you bowl straight.subsub wrote: ↑Wed Aug 11, 2021 8:24 amI think you're confusing "bottle" with "cricketing ability".Zambo wrote: ↑Wed Aug 11, 2021 8:23 am Huge blow. Without Root we really are a shambles of a batting side, and the bowling is only marginally better. If Root fails at Lords we will be fucked unless they find some bottle from somewhere..

I would of thought the lack of red ball cricket is a factor as well though ability and technique also comes in to play there. India seem to be able to switch codes far easier than we do.Zambo wrote: ↑Wed Aug 11, 2021 8:34 amtbf it's both. We really need The Ashes deferred for a year otherwise it’s going to seem a very long tour with us getting a hiding.

Batsmen like Burns and Crawley are obviously highly skilled, but they just don't quite look the finished article.
Crawley's 267 against Pakistan was a fantastic innings, and Burns has looked good at times, but we definitely look flakey, and as you say, if Root is out cheaply, we're screwed, plus we don't have Stokes coming in further down to get us out of jail.

Gone from being favourites to sinking to defeat in two sessions. England now 67-5.

Pathetic. But then what do you expect when you have an organisation running the game that barely gives a shit about it's flagship team?

Game over, England were shit. Blown away by a more dynamic, spirited and hard working side. We were limp and directionless.

Starts from the top. How can you chuck players into a Test series against an world class all round side who have played no first-class cricket for between 2 and 6 months?kancutlawns wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 6:37 pm Game over, England were shit. Pissing about in that joke gimmicky shite a week before the fucking series starts.
The players aren't good enough but they sure aren't helped by the idiots running the game.

It needs to be said that the children who were told that "The Hundred" was proper cricket would have been thinking "Why didn't England just smash 6 sixes an over?" The answer is, of course, that the authorities lied to them.
The Hundred will NOT lead to children watching a five-day Test, "as any fule kno".

But at least future generations will be excellent at a format that nobody else plays.JimmyDee wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 7:03 pm It needs to be said that the children who were told that "The Hundred" was proper cricket would have been thinking "Why didn't England just smash 6 sixes an over?" Exactly and causing a lack of technique for the red ball game. It’s patently obvious.JW90 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 6:44 pmStarts from the top. You develop techniques based on natural ability. You develop new ones, but you don't forget the ones you learned first. Professional cricketers should be able to adapt much better than England's have done. The point about not playing red ball for a while is a valid one, practice is essential.Jonathan wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 7:57 pmExactly and causing a lack of technique for the red ball game. The bottom line is that India have much better players than England at the moment. For e.g. wtf is Sibley still doing in the team, is there no one better?

Concentrated that much on getting the limited over game right they have set back their ability to play test cricket.
