Sri Lanka was similar. Not seen poverty like Colombo before or since.

And Africa. I visited a village in Zambia. The school was a makeshift mud hut with Victorian style wooden desks. The locals literally nothing, albeit the clothes on their backs.

Ha. Reminds me. Went to a lake outside of Oddanchatram, TN early evening for some beers and snacks. After a while, noticed a 'gang' of monkeys in the distance slowly approaching, over 100m and more adding. Got a bit flustered when about 50m about but locals with were calm. Slowly approaching, only about 25m they started chucikng stones, running after them and shouting. A few, hard or dim, stayed for a bit, but soon ran. No monkeys were harmed and we packed up soon after.

Most fun was at Palani Temple:

You can walk up or cable car, but took the little winch car which was err fun:

Temple was magnificent and a whole community up there.

My Grandad spent a lot of time in India. He hated monkeys after a gang of them mugged him for bananas on a railway station.

He had a similar vendetta against seagulls after one nicked his ice cream when he was living in North Wales.

Silly old sod made us call him “Grandad Hippy”, because when we were born he was going through a phase of wanting to be a Buddhist, but spent most of his life trying to fight people. Once hung up on my dad mid-call because a bird watcher had tried to hit his dog with a stick and he had to go fight them (in his mid 70s at the time ). Got sent to borstal in his teens for nutting a teacher who called him thick. The stories are endless

RIP you Scrappy Doo old bastard 8)
