The official unofficial tennis 2017 - 2024 thread

New tennis season kicked off today. Yay. 8)

A win for Heather Watson. Naomi Broady plays her first match in Auckland tonight.

My only tip for this season is the rise of the young woman from Belarus, Aryna Sabalenka. A name to watch out for.

Also nice to see Marion Bartoli making a comeback this year.

As for the men's game - I'll leave that for Del and the experts to dissect. With Stan, Andy & Rafa all doubtful for Australia, will Roger scoop up another major or will the rebooted Novak regain his mojo? And can the next gen make any serious dent into the grand slams yet?

And out goes Novak as well...
Former world number one Novak Djokovic has postponed his long-awaited comeback because of an elbow injury.

The 12-time Grand Slam winner has not played since July's Wimbledon quarter-final and was expected to face Roberto Bautista Agut at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship on Friday.

He said: "This might affect the start of the season and the tournament plan."

British number one Andy Murray, who has also been hampered by injury in recent months, will replace him.
Does mean Murray plays at 3pm today. Del can settle back and enjoy the return of his hero.

Andy Murray is clearly still not anywhere close to being fit to play tennis. Uncomfortable. :(

Is Laura Robson still playing? Of course I hope she is, but then part of me hopes she's retired to become a hardcore pornstar.

Murray’s lost his motivation since becoming a dad again. He’ll never win another major now

He's not lost his motivation since becoming a dad again - he's been injured you idiot. You can have all the motivation in the world, but if you can't get on the court due to a chronic hip injury then it won't make any difference.

Andy Murray withdraws from Brisbane Open. Still injured. Unlikely to play AO.

Spain away in the Davis Cup will be interesting. It will need heroics from Kyle to get us a win. If we have to play a relegation match at the end of the year, we should at least have Dan Evans back. But never rule out the fast improving Cameron Norrie. Nor the teenager Jay Clarke - coached by the guy who took Konta from nowhere to a top ten player.

Always stay positive.
