Great.

Is that an agreement? Good to see that you are not a member of the phoney grievers club sub. :smt023

It's a fair topic for debate, although maybe this isn't the thread to do that whilst posters are expressing their sadness for the departed.

I personally don't get how a famous persons death would actually "affect" you to the point of grieving.
I was fucking gutted when Joe Strummer died, but I didn't "grieve".
I was sad that I'd never see him live again.
Sad that my favorite band would never reform.
Also probably a little sad because I'd grown up with his music and knew he wouldn't produce any more.
There was no fucking outpouring of faux grief or owt though.
I never knew him (I did meet him once though tbf)
People should Be philosophical about these things.

Don't think "affect" here means that.
You are sad
You want to listen and watch as much as you can in a short space of time.
You aren't in tatters and don't want to turn up at the funeral,
Bowie,Elvis were like that for me together with videos of Best at his best.
Someone who I have listened too after his death was Leonard Cohen who
is tremendous :ANAL:

The definition of affected and it's synonyms mostly mean more than sad. That's why I queried it, I wasn't being facetious. There is a lot of faux distress out there when someone famous dies.

I'm not sure about full-on grieving, but I'm sure people are genuinely sad when a celebrity they've followed/listened to/seen live etc dies. That's fairly natural.

I was really sad when the following people died:
- Kurt Cobain
- Rik Mayall
- Terry Wogan
- Victoria Wood
- Carrie Fisher

especially because I grew up with them so they were part of my life. Wasn't crying buckets, but still felt genuinely sad they weren't around any more. But no candles were lit etc

I used to love Auberon Waughs diary when I used to get Private Eye.
And though the Thorpe scandal was a bit before my Eye reading years - though I certainly remember the scandal and the thousand bad jokes it spawned - it was Waugh who coined the slogan, which I still use as it sums the fuckers up very succinctly - "Vote Liberal. Or we'll shoot your dog."

He stood against Thorpe as a Dog Lovers candidate didn't he. :)

His diary was a masterpiece.

You can get a paperback collection if the entire ten years or so for a couple of quid. I'll send a link if you're interested.

Met Manning once and spent some time with him. nice bloke. Spoke to Waugh briefly on the phone once and he was reassuringly brusque. :)

Friends and acquaintances have told me of witnesing Cook and Manning being jaw-droppingly offensive and funny as fuck.

Im pretty sure I had that once years ago. Long gone now of course.
Yeah the link would be handy.

His affection for Jon Pilger and Roy Hattersleywas touching.
And he was one of the few humans to almost manage to machine gun himself to death. I think the injuries sustained caught up with him in the end, didnt they?
