For me, getting the news that most people have died is sad news, although there are some which hasn't been, but unless I actually know someone, I don't actually get what I would call 'affected'. I used to love Auberon Waughs diary when I used to get Private Eye.
And though the Thorpe scandal was a bit before my Eye reading years - though I certainly remember the scandal and the thousand bad jokes it spawned - it was Waugh who coined the slogan, which I still use as it sums the fuckers up very succinctly - "Vote Liberal. Or we'll shoot your dog."
