Thanks to Shedboy and dear deise and veritas for info earlier in this thread. Sorted future hols in head now. 2018 over next year, want to go back to eastern Europe, Poland again over Russia, that can wait for later. As can North Korea, still on the horizon.

Already excited. Fly to NY, train to Chicago, pick up the California Zephyr to San Francisco. Day or two there and fly/train or even Greyhound to Vegas, a week at the Luxor and back home. Dated and in need of a lick of paint hotels are great. If can tie up with some boxing, best. Must see boxing in Vegas.

Thinking of going full pikey next year and taking the kids to a Haven caravan park. A week in Spain all inclusive is coming in at 3k for the four of us.

Great Danish blokes, big drinkers, all up early for the complimentary morning fry up. Shame for our boss though, Carsten, a big bloke, had his stag night in Yarmouth.

Stripper in a backstreet boozer was ok, later carried on to Angels lap dancing club, ruck ensued with some bastards and bouncers more to do some of our group being Danish and Yarmouth's shiteness and insularity and he got a massive shiner.

Still bad when flew back to Denmark for the wedding and despite make up work, photos weren't great.

I've done a fair bit of thas trip this year. The California Zephyr was great. It was a bit boring between Chicago and Denver with mostly flat farmland. The rest of the way to Oakland went through amazing mountains, lakes and rivers. It's not exactly high speed rail but there are plenty of random people to talk to on the train.

I wouldn't bother with the Greyhound from SF to Vegas. It only costs £30 but takes about 18 hours and involves a change of buses in LA with the bus station being in Skid Row. If you the coach is running late you could end up being in stuck in a shithole for hours waiting for the next connection. For about £50 you can get a hour-long flight to Las Vegas. Another way to do it would be to split the bus journey up and stay a night in Reno. It's not the swankiest place but it's a bit like Vegas 20 years ago and you can still find $2 blackjack, $1 pints and $5 steak dinners.

While the Vegas hotels can appear cheap mid-week but bear in mind that most of the Strip and a fair few of the downtown hotels add on resort fees of $15-$20 per night which can give you an unexpected bill of over £100 if you stay for a week.

Glad the Zephyr was worth it. Definitely want to do it and you've given more ideas.Do like the Greyhound idea as flying is easy, but coach has its problems. And ta about the rest and Vegas info.

Wedding in LA next month - Santa Monica no less Going to make a stop on the way home in Chicago for three nights. I'll work from my company's office there and will go watch the Blackhawks, see some Edward Hopper art and have a Friday night session in Wicker Park.

Nice, Zippy. As per did a day and a half in Chicago in 2013. Managed Soldier Field, Wrigley Field, just for looks. The Willis Tower, Millennium Park and Navy Pier amongst others. Great city, nay bother. Chicago L, the metro is so simple.

It's close enough. From New Brighton you get a cracking view of the Liverpool docks. It's possibly closer to the Albert Dock than Anfield or Goodison, although I haven't checked with the atlas so this may be slightly out.

Just slightly further would be my guess, but more fun for swimmers
