The criticism of its ethnic cleaning in Gaza is beginning to get louder so it had to make a move which would illicit sympathy from its allies and arms providers.
Attacking a consulate/embassy is against international law but Israel cares nothing for international law of war conventions, as we can see in Gaza.
Instead of criticising Israel for breaking international law its allies are condemning the aggrieved to answering back and saying that launching 100 missiles on Jerusalem was over reaction, yet razing Gaza to the ground and trying to eradicate the population brings only mild criticism.

I have no truck with Iran, its a nasty regime, but its hypocrisy to criticise one regime whilst letting another get away with far worse.
