Not a cake, but reminded of this by the thread title.
My mother, sometimes surprised me with her expressions.
When I was a very young chap, to remind us what poverty would be like, would tell us what our tea would be - ‘skimps’.
This was of course, bread dipped in shit and fried.
Fortunately we never had to descend to that level.
