Whilst we wait for Jerry and Danny to upload their videos of game 5, we'll meet another new friend. Jerry and Danny both do live coverage so their vids will probably be up tomorrow so kudos to GM Peter Svidler for getting highlights up so quickly.

Svidler, currently number 21 in the world does commentary for chess24 on youtube and caught the end of it today and he's very good; fast analysis and a laconic sense of humour. Unlike his co-commentator, GM Eric Hansen, who is a lot
of a cunt.

Anyway, game 5 and Carlsen with white varies from the Ruy Lopez (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5) with the ever so slightly different Italian (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4), one Bishop square different but a whole different game. Karjakin replies 3...Bc4 for the Giuoco Piano. Only watched the end of live and the start of this so no middle game watching so will comment later:

Best of 12, first to 6.5 wins:

Carlsen 2.5 - 2.5 Karjakin
Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline.

Jerry:

Danny in a fetching red jumper:

So Karjakin had loose, vague, difficult chances but not going near them. Interesting, Danny mentioning tension and possibly tiredness affecting them. Five draws may seem dull, but some most interesting chess so far.

Game 6 and another Ruy Lopez. :) But shorter than the others. Tactical but lots of exchanges and again opposite bishops and draw. Danny says Karjakin is tired. Rest day tomorrow and then they switch so Karjakin white again.

Live coverage of game 7 with the great and my new like, Peter Svidler. Also German GM Jan Gustafsson who is also quite amusing. Looks another draw:

Game 7 and another draw. Karjakin plays 1 d4. A Slav variation of the Queens Gambit Declined. Man I hate queenside openings. Jerry say it nice about 28...Rc8.

An interesting poiint in his theoretical lines about 13'30" is 32...Bc3 and then 33 a4. Interesting how many people forget about en passant as a move.

Anyway, opposite bishops and a draw:

GM Danny King pondering already some rapidplay tiebreak for Karjakin:

Best of 12, first to 6.5 wins:

Carlsen 3.5 - 3.5 Karjakin

I said before about GM Peter Svidler being very amusing. And GM Jan Gustafsson and Svidler on their live videos. Watch from 1'53" and amusing asides about super GMs and Carlsen's film, which I thought was lovely:

It's fascinating to see how GMs speak about computer moves. Which maybe are perfect moves but not human moves.

And very interesting it was. Another queenside opening from Carlsen, which led to a Colle, white playing d4 and then at some stage e3. A very safe line, not one for a world champion with white, one would ponder.

Excellent analysis by Jerry of c5 blunder and Karjakin playing Qd3, but both in bad time trouble. A fantastic endgame though, Carlsen cares, he doesn't want to win his world championship title back on draws and some rapidplay.

A fianchetto Bishop is nice down the lines, but if blocked as Carlsen's on g2 with the e4 pawn, a piece totally out of the game. 51...h5 a killer after Carlsen's Qe6.

Jerry:

Go Danny: "Game 8 of the World Chess Championship was played today in New York and what a sensational encounter this was."
Danny's anaylsis of Karjakin safety first playing is spot on. And fortune does not always favour the brave. :) Svidler said Karjakin next best to Vishy when pressé.

Best of 12, first to 6.5 wins:

Carlsen 3.5 - 4.5 Karjarkin

Four to play.

Even non-chess fans should watch. As per and only recently noted the great GM Jan Gustafsson and superb err super GM Peter Svidler youtubes live on chess24.

It is probably water, but old Svidler at 4'38" opens his bottle, has a large swig and puts it down with a large thud. That is glass, no one has water in glass bottles now. God bless the Russian if supping vodka. :) :drinkers: And then continues a great debate about medical TV series about Doctors with 'House', Grays Anatomy' and 'Scrubs', and moves on to 'Doctor Who'. Class comedy. Watch the rest if you want to see their opinion of Carlsen's loss, which they didn't foresee:

Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline.

GM Peter Svidler, bless him, doing the summarising straight after hours of commentary, well he is getting coin, but hey.

Game 9 analysis. And this is GM anaylsis and so quick and bewtiful:

As is bewtiful, little chubby cheeks, Pochettino, Svidler looks like him as well.

Best of 12, first to 6.5 wins:

Carlsen 4 - 5 Karjakin

There have been many mentions of Carlsen leaving the presser before Karjakin got there: https://www.rt.com/sport/367918-carlsen ... -meltdown/

I was at the presser of game 4, it takes a couple of minutes TV interviews before they get seated. They were taking too long and rightly, Carlsen, sat there after losing with hundreds of cameras and phones photographing him sat there on the stage alone, thought, "Fuck that, they're taking the piss."

And I concur with him:

Though as per, look at his face, just look at his face. The scared, lost boy of videos shown is still there. Fuck all the model contracts and socalled glam, he is just Magnus with his family.
Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline.
