Whilst reading some Kasparov stuff about his Blitz performance in the States a few months back, see video v Nakamura, saw this article which for RM and my other posts, echoes much of what I said about the mental toll. Especially the names. Dear old Tal, poor young Morphy, Crazy cunt Bobby and Kasparov and yay, some kicking under the table. :) At the bottom of the Article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05 ... -st-louis/
psychological warfare
Five men mad about the game
PHOTO: Corbis

Mikhail Tal (1936-1992) was not only regarded as a creative genius but also a master of psychological warfare. It was said that the Latvian grandmaster would hypnotise his opponents with his infamous stare.
Tigran Petrosian (1929-1984) was partially deaf and known as a ‘mysterious’ player. It is rumoured he once became involved in a kicking war under the table, when he faced his rival Viktor Korchnoi (1931-) in a candidates match. History does not relate who started it.
When Garry Kasparov (1963-) sensationally lost to Deep Blue in 1997 he became paranoid that the IBM supercomputer was being secretly programmed by other grandmasters from a nearby hotel. He reckoned his old rival Anatoly Karpov (1951-) might have been one of them.
The greatest clash in chess history came at the height of the Cold War in 1972, when the American Bobby Fischer (1943-2008) beat the Soviet Boris Spassky (1937-) in Reykjavík. There was gamesmanship aplenty, with Fischer arriving hours late and complaining about everything from his hotel being bugged to the cameras being too loud.
Another world champion, albeit unofficial, who may have been driven mad by chess was the American Paul Morphy (1837-1884). It was said he had a fetish for women’s shoes and would wander the streets of New Orleans muttering incomprehensibly to himself.

Timed for the World Championship, a documentary of, as per RM, 'The Chin', as per me, never a model, the highest rated player ever, Magnus Carlsen. But a good man. Looks good, well I like the look, of the film. Good review: http://www.thehollywoodnews.com/2016/04 ... w-tribeca/

As per this review, the younger Carlsen stuff is taken form 'The Prince of Chess' documentary: https://chess24.com/en/read/news/magnus-the-movie

And 13yo Carlsen drawing with Kasparov. There is just so much there fascinating, with Garry and a boy who sometimes looks lost:

The champ in a bit of a pro-celeb blindfold simul. That they ain't great players makes a bit of a differnce and that Carlsen was playing on time also does.

Fucking Maurice Ashley, the voice of excitable chess, hosting does not bode well. As does his talking over moves. But yay and amazement at Carlsen so easy. As per, blindfold is a destroyer of minds and souls and fucks:

Just watched Jerry. Tight, cagey opener but a good draw for Karjakin with black.

First to 6.5 wins:

Carlsen 0.5 - 0.5 Karjakin

Game 2 today.

And what a documentary it was. As per the 'hollywoodnews' review above, their reviewer knows nothing about chess and loved it. I do and loved it.

Utterly fascinating human portrayal of the boy who became the man who is best ranked ever. I've mocked Carlsen before about his modelling, his sisters do in this, but seeing the real boy and man makes me warm to him.

Starts with amazing footage of Carlsen waiting for Anand for the start of game in Chennai behind glass and hundreds of photographers and Carlsen head bowed before it starts, a man alone and lost.

As per, much home footage and dad saying about young Magnus being in his own world accompanied by a hilarious clip of dad setting up a little jump over a pole for Magnus and sister. Sister jumps and Magnus runs straight through it.

Then, more on Iceland and the game v Kasparov where the boy lost turns and looks to his parents and family who give him the thumbs up and he carries on. The young boy looking lost as the man in Chennai later.

The whole Chennai championship looks typical Indian mentalism with Carlsen landing, getting the full welcome looking like he wants to fuck back on the plane to Norway. We know the result of the match but more lovely scenes right to the end.

During an interview to the director, this incredible piece of dialogue. RM, as to the crossover with arrars, could see MvG like this to a lesser extent:
Interviewer: "How often will you say that you think about chess?"

Carlsen: "It's hard to say. Sometimes it feels like all the time, sometimes I get a bit of a break. But it's always, it's almost always in the back of my mind."

Interviewer: "Do you think about chess now?"

Carlsen: "Yes."

Interviewer: "What do you think about?"

Carlsen: "It's different fragments of games. My mind is just analysing stuff in the background."
Have to give it a Carlos 9/10. A must see.
Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline.

Game 2 from Saturday. Whilst game 1 was a rarely seen Trompowsky with some wags from the chess rags debating an allusion to Trump as we are in NYC, game 2 with Karjakin as white was a much more orthodox and familiar Ruy Lopez, yay.

Here's Jerry:

GM Danny King:

Well another draw. I enjoyed it, sensible development and piece orientation, little risk taking. But still good for the amateur to learn. Develop and don't go off on dodgy pushes, something I can't help doing v Kow.

Not sure about Jerry's graph but hey, Jerry and Danny agreed on most. Some have said dull games, Danny calls it right as good games played with tension. And Carlsen called it better in the presser:
“I ask you for your understanding that this is a long match,” Carlsen said at Saturday’s postgame press conference. “Not every game will be a firework.”
Quite right, Magnus. And do like this piece: http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/dra ... mpionship/
So best of 12, first to 6.5 wins:

Carlsen 1 - 1 Karjakin

Game 3 Monday should be over now, vids to come.

Until Jerry and Danny sort their videos out, we have a new friend and we have drama. GM Niclas Huschenbeth describes the action and the mays, may nots and maybes of the ending:

Here's Jerry on game 3:

And dear old GM Danny King:

Great analysis of the endgame by Danny. A 7 hour thriller and stoic defending by Karjakin in a game Carlsen should have won.

So best of 12, first to 6.5 wins:

Carlsen 1.5 - 1.5 Karjakin

Seven hours for game 3, you'd think the day after a quicky? But nope, six and a half hours and 94 moves for game 4. And another thriller and defence from Karjakin. He made a mistake with Bxh6, and Carlsen had the very difficult chances, but fortress after fortress from Karjakin wouldn't let Carlsen through. The man is sticking with Carlsen.

Went to see this. Fascinating event, people and the presser after was intriguing. Watching Carlsen there, you can still see the as per lost boy there at times, though often masked and he is quite funny. Maybe a snap or two when home. This is an interesting article about it: http://www.tabletmag.com/scroll/218050/ ... four-games

Here's Jerry:

GM Danny King:

Best of 12, first to 6.5 wins:

Carlsen 2 - 2 Karjakin.
