Angelica Garnett - Deceived with Kindness: A Bloomsbury Childhood (1984)
Beautifully written memoirs by Angelica Garnett (1918-2012), born into the famous Bloomsbury Set; The Bells, The Woolfs , fellow academics, artists and lovers. During her childhood, Angelica believed Clive Bell was her father; who apparently turned a blind eye to Vanessa's (her mother) affair with other men including Duncan Grant, who turned out to be her biological father.
She later married artist David Garnett who also seduced Grant.
Perhaps Angelica wished for normality in her isolated, deceptive, yet privileged and often strangely happy life.
Compelling reading.

Reprint of 1863 Bradshaw's Descriptive Railway Hand-Book of Great Britain and Ireland
A glimpse into a bygone world, such as the entry for Lewisham!
LEWISHAM is a small village, in a beautiful situation on the high road to Sevenoaks and Tunbridge, and near the river Ravensbourne.
A charming read although at times it can leave you with a feeling of longing for a lost era

There is something so smug about will self that it puts me off approaching any and all of his work. I'm probably missing out but I just can't bring myself to reading anything he puts to paper.Roquetas wrote:

Great novels, especially the early stories; not so keen on later books I must admit. I always buy them anyway.Sir Humphrey Appleby wrote:Since X-Mas I have tanned Ian Rankin's Knots & Crosses,Hide and Seek,Tooth and Nail and Strip Jack.Ah like a dour copper me Beaky.
Peter Robinson's DCI Banks is another good collection. Avoid the TV series...

Re: Currently Reading
It's taken me 2-3 weeks ago to get around. It's not long or that interesting, but fine enough. To use a terrible/lazy description (e.g them both being set yonks ago and some colorful writing for the time) it's like a drug fuelled version of Jack Kerouc's 'On The Road'. Well, a bit. I do like all the talk of 'subway cars' and imaging what New York's subway system was like back then, or 'Irish, Italian, Polish' and them actually being those rather than 5th generation's who are actually Scottish descent but think they are Irish.

I enjoyed some of his audio performances (available on Spotify); including What Keeps Mankind Alive and Origin and Theory of The Tape Cut-Ups. Burroughs had a very striking accent, I'd prefer listening to an audio version of Junky.kevin04 wrote:
